They are mainly used for monetary exchange, travel, short distance passage marking, or advertisement or marketing purposes, but some may have other uses.. Generally, they are small enough to fit in the human hand and will have inscriptions denoting value, purpose, or meaning. These items may or may not have dates associated with them as they are often used for long periods of time before being retired.
