St. Peters Church was founded in 1916 and started with a congregation of about twenty-five parishioners. In 1924 the " barn church" was moved back on the property and a new, "proper" house of worship was built on site. A half a century later the church building was no longer able to hold the increasing number of attendees. The old church was was torn down and the parish hall was remodeled into a church sanctuary with much larger seating capacity.

Mixed Photo Collection 3rd Annual Goodwin Library Art Exhibition Feb 1986 From March 1986 Puddledock Press
Description
An account of the resource
Mixed Photo Collection 3rd Annual Goodwin Library Art Exhibition Feb 1986 From March 1986 Puddledock Press The Goodwin Library recently held its 3rd annual Art Exhibition, running from February 10 – February 15.

From the caption in the March 1986 Puddledock Press edition:

More than 45 works of art were on hand and most were loaned by local residents.

Head Librarian, Phyllis Kuligowski, co-originater of the event, was very pleased with this year's turnout. The first Art Exhibition, in 1984, consisted of approximately 15 oil paintings, but has gfrown to also include pastels, ink sketches, black and white photographs, and crafts as well.

Local artist, Anna Richards, displayed three of her oil paintings. Ms. Richards, a long time resident of Farmington, has been painting for the last 10 years and conducting art classes for the last three. Due to her enthusiasm and encouragement, several of her students decided to participate also. Each student chose their own subject matter, resulting in a colorful addition to the other oil painting on display. Ms Richards said that though some of her students were reluctant at first, they soon were glad they took this opportunity to show their creativity.

Elementary school principal, Tim Woodward, loaned 8 items to the event, including several pressed flower arrangements and some unique oil paintings on wood.

Two more Farmington residents, Ed and Betty Demers, also contributed a few of their works. Mr. Demers displayed two of his woodworkings; a hand carved rooster, and a beautiful hand made dulcimer. For those like myself, who may not be familiar with it, Mr. Demers was able to provide us with a bit of history concerning the dulcimer. Dating back to medieval Europe, the dulcimer is a musical instrument with sounds similar to a zither. Though not known for sure, it is believed to have been introduced to this country by the Pennsylvania Germans, some 200 years ago. Though the instrument he exhibited was made of cherry wood, he has made at least 24 others, using woods such as pine and walnut. Desides those items, Mr. Demers has also handcrafted several wooden chests and decoys. Mrs. Demers loaned 2 of her oil paintings to the exhibition.

If you were unable to get out and see the exhibition this time around, don't despair, because Mrs. Kuligowski is planning an even larger exhibit for next year.

RKL-FHS

FARMINGTON CEMETERY ASSOCIATION was incorporated '
in the year 1659- The notice was published in the town
paper
That was w h a t was r e q u i r e d i n 1659- The
organization e n t e r e d into existence for the families and
f r i e n d s in the town of Farmington and the surrounding areaHowever, in 1953 i t was discovered t h a t the details of
the recording of this fact had not been r e g i s t e r e d at the
State capitol. This came about because the Association
T r u s t e e s w e r e involved in selling land for the construction of
a State highway. Therefore, the necessary r e q u i r e m e n t s for
t h a t day w e r e completed and the FARMINGTON CEMETERY
ASSOCIATION was r e - i n c o r p o r a t e d , recorded at the proper
places of r e c o r d , and continued on in business!
E a r l y on i n the organization's h i s t o r y , the f i r s t elected
officers w e r e made. P r e s i d e n t - John T u t t l e , and S e c r e t a r y B. F. P e r k i n s . As s e c r e t a r y , B. F. P e r k i n s kept a l l the
Cemetery r e c o r d s at his place of business. When t h i s business
burned, about 1912, a l l the Cemetery r e c o r d s w e r e destroyed.
The e a r l y t r u s t e e s then set about getting things back in
order.
I t should be noted t h a t these men s e r v e d as e a r l y
t r u s t e e s of the organization. George Wood, Samuel Amazeen,
Charles B e r r y , John Otis, Charles Scruton. These men "took
c a r e " of the a r e a . Family members w e r e responsible for the
mowing of the plots in the summer time.
I t is interesting to note t h a t Nelson H a r t f o r d s e r v e d as
the Association grave digger at this time. His pay w a s four
d o l l a r s for each g r a v e t h a t w a s opened.
In 1060 i t was recognized t h a t a place w a s needed to
be used as a receiving tomb, especially during the w i n t e r
months. Ten local men contributed $50 each to have this
building constructed. I t i s known today as "The Tomb" and i t
is located at the entrance of the Cemetery.
I t w a s soon evident t h a t p r o p e r t y needed to be
obtained for this cemetery beyond w h a t was the i n i t i a l land.
E a r l i e r Benjamin Ham had owned a f a r m on both sides of
Main S t r e e t .
His farmhouse w a s on the east side and on the
w e s t side t h e r e was an o r c h a r d , a s t r e t c h of old r o c k y
p a s t u r e land, and a pine, maple t r e e a r e a t h a t was called
"Ham's Woods"
I t w a s in this a r e a that the oldest g r a v e y a r d
in Farmington was located. I t was just a small a r e a that
I.
THE
TOMB
1.
w a s not fenced i n . To get to ttie plot one had to w a l k
through an old pair of b a r s from Maih s t r e e t and go over a
rough p a s t u r e land to the a r e a that was used as a g r a v e y a r d
by s e v e r a l of the Farmington families. Many of the e a r l y
village people w e r e laid - to - r e s t in this e a r l y a r e a .
Families f r o m
outside of the village often had family
plots r i g h t on t h e i r f a r m s . Eventually, families began to use
the a r e a of the present site and many family members f r o m
these other a r e a s w e r e moved to t h i s "new", c e n t r a l location.
The "new s i t e " became known as the PINE GROVE CEMETERY.
Often people ask about t h i s name. Before 1946 the
upper section of the Cemetery held a majestic grove of r e d
and w h i t e pine t r e e s . During the h u r r i c a n e of 1946 most of
t h i s pine grove came crashing down! This section is r e f e r r e d
to as Section 12 today. The Association choose the name: Pine
Grove, to highlight this grove of t r e e s . One can s t i l l catch a
glimpse of those magestic pines as one w a l k s through the
"upper sections" of the Cemetery. Along the side facing the
'Gator Ponds" one can s t i l l see a few of those t a l l pines.
This present site of the Pine Grove Cemetery w a s
purchased f r o m one of the original T r u s t e e s : Samuel Amazeen.
M r . Amazeen owned a large f a r m on present Route 11. The
farmhouse w a s located h e r e . Land on the back of the f a r m
w a s chosen to extend the Cemetery. As the new site was
developed much of the s h r u b b e r y from the Amazeen f a r m w a s
t r a n s p l a n t e d to help landscape the Cemetery. This i n i t i a t e d the
continuing focus that the T r u s t e e s and the Superintendents
have held a l l these y e a r s as they have been concerned about
the landscaping of this "pleasant place".
The Superintendent of the Cemetery has been an
overseeing and working position, r e q u i r i n g much planning w i t h
the T r u s t e e s to cause the Cemetery to be the "place of
r e m b e r a n c e " that i t is today.
Each y e a r hundreds of friends, family members, and
acquaintences r e t u r n to wander through the lanes, roads,
gardens, and plots to reflect upon people from the past, and
enjoy the scenery of the hills at the horizon. No one should
miss the autumn colors of these hills.
3.
Recognition must be given here to the Superintendents
and the T r u s t e e s for t h e i r foresight, vision, and continuous
involvement i n the Association's progress over these y e a r s .
Landscaping has been a constant p r i o r i t y as the gardens,
s h r u b s , and t r e e s have been planted, pruned, cultivated and
nourished. Flower gardens a r e a s u r p r i s e and delight each
year.
Plots of land have been added to the original site.
These a r e a s have been diligently developed for the benefit of
the people of this Association through the y e a r s . The most
r e c e n t development is the plot known as the 'Hattie and Ralph
White Place". This s t r i p of land has g r e a t l y enlarged and
extended the Cemetery.
The most used entrance continues to be located on Canal
S t r e e t , just off South Main S t r e e t . Another entrance comes
d i r e c t l y off South Main S t r e e t and s e r v e s to provide a
convenient loop for the w i n t e r months w h e n t r a v e l to the
upper p a r t of the Cemetery is not reliable.
Originally the roads, or lanes as they w e r e called,
between the v a r i o u s sections of the Cemetery and between the
lots w e r e made of grass or g r a v e l cover. Today, the
Association T r u s t e e s have paved a l l the major section
r o a d w a y s . This is a major contribution for a l l of us and
r e v e a l s the awareness and concern of those men and women
who a r e responsible.
"The Office", as many folks call i t , has set up on the hill
w h e r e the pine grove used to be! I t continues to be a contact
place during the summer days. Recently, however, i t w a s
recognized that "the office" needed to be more accessable
y e a r - r o u n d . Therefore,
"the office" has been relocated w i t h
the a v a i l a b i l i t y of the building originally the site of the
monument w o r k s of B e r t W. Baston. This building is located at
the Canal S t r e e t entrance. A memorial fund. The Baston
Memorial, has made i t possible to develop this a r e a . With the
ever increasing business that is c a r r i e d on i n the office of the
Association t h e r e w i l l be room and facilities available. The
Board of Officers and T r u s t e e s of the Association have been
meeting here r e g u l a r i l y . The Superintendent w i l l be working
out of this place. W o r k e r s w i l l s t i l l use both locations as
needed.
I n addition, the Association has provided a Central
Garage located m i d - w a y of the Cemetery, near the pump-house
on L i t t l e Gator Pond.
A r e h e a r s a l of the Pine Grove Cemetery would not be
complete if one forgot to mention the men, women, young men.
and young ladies who have ' w o r k e d " at the Cemetery!
Junior
high and high school students, as w e l l as "vacation-time"
college students have looked f o r w a r d to the "job" available to
them during the s p r i n g , summer and fall days. Many, many
r e t u r n to s h a r e w h a t they consider to be valuable "learning
t i m e " as they w o r k e d at t h e i r job in the Cemetery.
Others,
on a "full time" schedule, have been faithful in the task of
indeed making this a "place of rememberance".
Our "thanks"
to each one!
Custom has been honored at PINE GROVE CEMETERY.
Often families have followed the p a t t e r n set up by four
families f r o m the e a r l y days. I n o r d e r to have families near
each other, the families of W. Roberts, Ichabod B e r r y , John
Ham, and O.E. Jones purchased lots near each other. You w i l l
find t h i s grouping i n Section 4. Other families continue this
custom, even today.
Many families purchase "family plots".
Others invest in single or two or t h r e e g r a v e lots.
E a r l y on i t w a s usual t h a t each owner of a lot would
receive a y e a r l y b i l l for the c a r e and up-keep of the lot. I n
the busy w o r l d of today and the increased number of lots in
t h i s Cemetery,
i t has been found that to establish a
"perpectual c a r e - f u n d " was more acceptable and
more dependable.
Thus, today, lots a r e invested i n and a r e
placed under the c a r e of t h i s fund enabling the daily w o r k to
be c a r r i e d out and c a r e to be planned for the Cemetery.
Memorial investments have also been made by
families thus enabling much w o r k to be c a r r i e d out now and
in the f u t u r e .
E x p r e s s i o n of thanks must go to the many
families who have shown t h e i r i n t e r e s t and concern i n the
w o r k of the Association and the up-keep of the Cemetery.
Time and space does not permit the r e h e a r s a l of the
b i t - b y - bit development, at a minimal cost, of such lovely
6,
areas as the:
AMERICAN LEGION MEMORIAL section s u r r o u n d e d
by a background of s p i r e a ,
C I V I L WAR MEMORIAL a r e a overlooking the hills,
VETERANS OF WORLD WARS MEMORIAL which is
the center of a p a r k a r e a .
The d i s t i n c t i v e VERMONT GRANITE BENCHES given
in memory of distinguished persons who have s e r v e d the
people of Farmington: Dr. McLaughlin, Norman L. Otis, Walter
Huckins, Robert Ricker, John L a w r e n c e J r . , Robert Hoage and
others.
THE SQUARE GAZEBO sits at the top of the hill as
you move to the "upper p a r t of the Cemetery". This is a w e l l
photographed spot.
A t Memorial Day one can see s e v e r a l
citizens of our Community enjoying the advantage of this point!
F A M I L Y TOMBS a r e standing at the top of the
f i r s t h i l l , too. Their continuous green mounds reflect the c a r e
given to these plots. The B a r r e granite stands out to those
who a r e sensitive to "stone".
Throughout the Cemetery wonderful pieces of
B a r r e g r a n i t e , Vermont marble, and Concord granite stand for
people to study the v a r i e t y and design of monuments and
m a r k e r s . Indeed one can understand the phrase "rock of ages".
I t would be difficult to estimate the number of people
who come to the PINE GROVE CEMETERY each summer and fall
to look up and t r a c e back family members.
Often
photographers w i l l be seen as they capture a r e c o r d of the
monuments and m a r k e r s t h a t have been set out in
rememberance.
For many, the Cemetery is a source for
historical record.
The heritage of any organization is dependent upon the
people who "see" the vision of i t s contribution to a Community
and then a r e diligent i n c a r r y i n g out the task t h a t is set
before them.
MAY THIS REMEMBRANCE contribute to the vision and
encourage those who w i l l pick up the task of providing a
place of rememberance
for the families, friends, acquaintances,
w a l k e r s , and joggers of FARMINGTON and the surrounding a r e a .
