1929 Old Town Hall Building Dedication Sepia Photograph
Description
An account of the resource
A 1929 sepia photograph of the Old Town Hall Building dedication day. The building was built on the site of the destroyed Farmington Opera House. The view is of the front and both sides of the building facing the Old Town Hall. The two story building, with an internal mezzanine or balcony is brick with white wooden trim. It has many double high windows on the front and both sides. The facade is done in Greek Revival style with a four column, double story portico with a small, angled roof. A set of double doors greet anyone ascending the three steps. Each front double door has a half semi-circle window above it. Mature trees are seen lining Main Street and surrounding buildings can be seen in the background. At least three vehicles can be seen in the photo on the street to the right of the building. A very large crowd of townsfolk are assembled in front of the building extending well into Main Street.
Condition: Fair. The photo has two edge tears; one in the lower right and one on the right half way up the photo. A corner is missing and small piece is missing from the border on the left. There are several stains. There is also some kind of paper adhered to the back of the photo, sporadically, probably from being adhered and then torn from a page.

The store was a all purpose household goods and pharmacy. Items offered included, but were not limited to: sodas, cigars, film, confectionery, drugs, medicine, and rubber goods. An awning, which provides shade to the frontage of the shop is open in the photo. <br /><br />The second W.W Roberts shop was at the center of the block. A full service women's clothier had two front display bay windows. Items offered included, but were not limited to: dry goods, home accessories, dresses ,skirts, hats, hosiery, gloves, and underwear. The shop has an awning similar to the other side of the Roberts store, but it is not open. <br /><br />Attached to the right was the one story addition which held A.E. Putnam Shoe store on one side and J.F. Safford and Son watch, jewelry, and optical shop <br /><br />A horse drawn cart can be seen sitting in front of building and to the side as well. Electric poles and lines can be seen in front of the building. <br /><br />The only business that can be seen via signage in the upper floors of the building is C. H. Pitman Insurance and Real Estate. C. H. Pitman was also a public notary. Advertising for Dr Garland's office can be seen in the next building over on the right. Dr. garland was a dentist. <br /><br />The building suffers a severe fire in 1957 and then suffers another fire in 1964. <br /><br /><a href="http://farmington.advantage-preservation.com/viewer/?k=odd%20fellows%20block%20fire&t=30323&i=t&d=01011955-12311963&m=between&ord=k1&fn=farmington_news_usa_new_hampshire_farmington_19570307_english_1&df=1&dt=10" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">View Part 1 of the 1957 Odd Fellows Block Article</a> <br /><a href="http://farmington.advantage-preservation.com/viewer/?k=odd%20fellows%20block%20fire&t=30323&i=t&d=01011955-12311963&m=between&ord=k1&fn=farmington_news_usa_new_hampshire_farmington_19570307_english_7&df=1&dt=10" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">View Part 2 of the 1957 Odd Fellows Block Article</a> <br /><a href="http://farmington.advantage-preservation.com/viewer/?k=odd%20fellows%20block%20fire&t=30323&i=t&d=01011879-12311976&m=between&ord=k1&fn=farmington_news_usa_new_hampshire_farmington_19641112_english_1&df=1&dt=10" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">View Part 1 of the 1964 Odd Fellows Block Article</a> <br /><a href="=" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">View Part 2 of the 1964 Odd Fellows Block Article</a> <br /><br /><br />This is a digital file and does not exist in the physical museum collection.<br /><br /><br />FHS-Kyle Leach

Black & White Portrait Pike Sisters Farmington NH
Description
An account of the resource
A black & white portrait of the Pike Sisters of Farmington, NH smiling and standing together, finly dressed in day attire dresses. A back of a chair is being used as a prop to the right of the sisters. The photocard is quite elaborate with a marbled effect and an inner decorative frame around the photo that seems to pull from the Art Nouevou period.<br /><br /><br /><em>From Forgotten NH:</em><br /><br /><em>Ellen (Pike) Murphy (1912-1948) and Madeline (Pike) Clarke (1911-1996) were born in Farmington, New Hampshire to parents John and Elizabeth (Cloutman) Pike. </em><br /><br /><em>Biddeford-Saco Journal (Biddeford, Maine): "Mrs. John Murphy Dies At Age Of 35. Mrs. Ellen Pike Murphy, 35, wife of John P. Murphy, died Sunday at the Glencliff sanatorium, Glencliff, N.H., after a long illness. She had been in failing health for the past 15 years, and had been at Glencliff for two years. She was born in Farmington, N.H., the daughter of J. Elver and Elizabeth Ellen C. Pike. She graduated from Farmington high school, and Hesser Business College, Manchester, N.H., and the New England School of Fine Arts. She came to the city in 1930 and was employed as a secretary-stenographer until they move to Farmington. She married in 1936 and has one son, L. Michael, 6. Besides, her husband and son, she is survived by her father; a sister, Mrs. John L. Clark., this city; a brother, John E. Pike, New York City, and a nephew and three nieces. Funeral arrangements will be announced later."</em><br /><br /><em> Madeleine Pike was married twice—to John Lewis Clarke (three children) and Gerald E. Miller. Records indicate that she was a student nurse in 1930, worked as an attendant floor lady in 1940, and as an office worker for an automobile salesman in 1950.</em><br /><br /><em> I purchased this well-preserved portrait taken at a studio in Biddeford, Maine at an antique shop in Scarborough, Maine several months ago. The Pike Sisters’ excited cousin in T</em>he Granite State will be receiving their photo this week! <br /><br /><br /><br /><br />This is a digital file and does not reside in the physical museum collection.<br /><br />FHS- Kyle Leach<em><br /></em>

Ned Parker Cottage Register Booklet Covering 1893 -1930
Description
An account of the resource
A typed copy of the seventy-four page Ned Parker Pine Bluff Cottage register booklet, typed at the hand of Ned Parker. The register covers a period of 1893 -1930. Included are photos and comments that may not have been in the original record.
The register contains weather notations, musing on local happenings, details of visits from locals and people from afar, building updates and repairs, remembrances of celebrations, and accounts of day to day tasks and meals. It reads as a who is who of the Farmington, NH community during the four decades it covers.
The cottage was in Alton Bay, Lake Winnipesaukee formerly owned by S.S. Parker of Farmington and S.P. Nute
Please note the first file is a photo of the cover, the second is an encapsulated Zip file with an EXE that will open an interactive flip book of the yearbook upon download, and the last file is a PDF version. The best version to view is the EXE Flipbook of the yearbook, but you will need to download, unzip, and execute the flip-book file.
